Description:
Most people who develop breast, ovarian or colorectal cancer do not have an inherited tendency for cancer. However, studies have shown that some people and families are at increased risk of developing these cancers if they carry specific genetic information. If you or your family members have been diagnosed with cancer, your doctor or nurse may refer you to this program. The focus of this program is to help people with a strong family history of certain cancers assess their personal risk of developing cancer. This assessment will help to formulate an individualized plan to reduce risk and promote early detection of cancer.

Programs for Breast, Ovarian, & Colorectal cancer risk assessment programs are available.

You can expect education regarding:

  • Cancer and cancer risk
  • Factors that can increase the chances of developing cancer
  • Lifestyle changes that may decrease the risk of cancer development
  • Genetics of an inherited predisposition for cancer
  • Current status of gene testing
  • The benefits and limitations of undertaking genetic testing

Completion of the program will provide:

  • A detailed evaluation and assessment of family and personal health history that will become the basis for a personal risk assessment by a team of health care professionals
  • Personalized recommendations for cancer screening
  • Referrals to a geneticist if appropriate and desired for formal genetic counseling and testing
  • Assisted referrals to other specialists, if needed, for further information, evaluation and recommendations
