Description:
Angel Flight Central's mission is to serve people in need by arranging charitable flights for access to health care and for other humanitarian purposes.

Most aircrafts are four to six-seat aircraft provided by volunteer pilots and cover Minnesota and everal surrounding states with free round trip flights for access to health care and for other humanitarian purposes. Serving MN, ND, SD, WI, IA, IL, IN, NE, MO & KS.

To qualify for an Angel Flight passengers must:

  1. Have financial need for assistance
  2. Be able to fly in a non-pressurized small aircraft
  3. Be ambulatory and able to sit upright in a standard aircraft seat
  4. Be responsible for their own medications
  5. Not have a communicable disease
  6. Provide Department of Transportation (DOT) approved supplemental oxygen and medical assistance (if required)
  7. Provide own transportation to and from airport and medical facility or final destination.
  8. Passengers must provide application request form at least 5 to 7 business days prior to flight date.  AFC needs this time to process paperwork; speak to the doctor to obtain a medical release; and, put the information out to volunteers.  The more time the better change of filling a flight need.

Angel Flight Central attempts to match each special need with a volunteer pilot who can help, be it a child requiring access to medical treatment in another area of the country or an adult requiring travel due to a family crisis. A call to their toll free voice mail system or filling the request a flight form at http://www.angelflightcentral.org/passengers.php will alert the flight coordinator of a need for free air transportation service. The coordinator will return the message and gather any necessary qualifying information.

Angel Flight recipients must answer several health questions in order to assess their fitness for flight in an unpressurized aircraft.  A medical release MUST be obtained from the passenger's physician most familiar with their situation who has seen them recently, before the passenger can fly.  If the answers to any of these questions suggest a problem may exist, written permission for the flight must be obtained from the passenger’s physician. If passengers require any medical assistance during the flight, they must bring someone who can assist them.  Angel Flight pilots are not trained in medical emergencies, and will not be able to provide any medical assistance.

Once approved, the flight request need is confidentially expressed to the qualified AFC pilots through a secure database. When a pilot finds a flight need that coordinates with their schedule and location they can easily ‘accept’ a flight with the push of a button and weather permitting the flight is scheduled and flown. AFC cannot guarantee a flight since working with volunteers and their limited time availability. AFC does not assign flights, but tries filling each flight utilizing volunteers who are available.

The aircraft flown by our volunteers are generally only large enough to carry from one to three passengers depending on maximum weight limit of pilot’s plane, plus the pilot and very little baggage. A caregiver may accompany or both parents may accompany a small child. Although the cabin is comfortable, weight and space are issues. For this reason, passengers must also provide information about their weight and weight of carry-on items. All luggage is limited to 50 total pounds combined weight. In helping people, we also make safety our highest priority.
